Marc Mellon

Creator of the Boomer Esiason Foundation MVP Trophy

Classically trained artist Marc Mellon is one of America's premier figure sculptors, well known for his bronze figures depicting athletes and dancers, and for his portrait busts and statues of achievers both here and abroad. Mellon's bronzes have honored leaders in the world of civics, philanthropy, business, medicine, sports and the arts.

In the sports world, his sculptures have captured the joy and energy of basketball (the NBA and WNBA MVP Awards, and the McDonald's International MVP), football (the Arena Football League Awards, and the Rimington Trophy), and hockey (the Bob Clarke Trophy), as well as gymnastics, golf, tennis, ice skating and diving. In 2003 Marc created the Boomer Esiason Pro-Am Sporting Clays Championship Trophy which features BEF Board member John F. Cassidy and his son Trey.

Mellon's realistic portrait busts have served to honor former president George Bush, Academy Award - winning actress Patricia Neal, and athletes Bobby Clark and Drazen Petrovic. Mellon also has done commissioned busts of former president Ronald Regan, Winston Churchill and President Lee Teng-Hui of Taiwan. His monument statues of Kate Smith (Philadelphia) and Dr. Alton Ochsner (New Orleans) have become local landmarks.

Mellon's sculpture of Boomer and Gunnar is linked in spirit to his "Circle of Life" series. Two large-scale Mellon Bronzes from this series depicting parents and children are found in Westport, Conn., and in Indianapolis.

"The sculpture of Boomer and Gunnar expresses the joy we experience in the birth and growth of our children," Mellon said. "I'm thrilled that it recognizes the efforts of such dedicated supporters of the Esiason Foundation, and especially of Billy Heinzerling, who is contributing so significantly to the fight to cure cystic fibrosis."

Mellon receives much inspiration for his work from his wife, sculptor Babette Bloch, and his daughters, Julia and Rachel. The Mellon family divides its time between Redding Conn., and Manhattan.
